280 Guided Learning Hours

We are currently struggling to achieve the 280Glh's we need as set out by the Skills Funding Agency.
As we deliver work based apprenticeships the learners are asked to complete key skills assignments in their own time or at work with permission of employers. If we were a college and the learners 16-19yr olds this would be no problem but we just cant achieve these work based.
Looks like the Skills Funding Agency will be clawing a lot of money back and seems a grey area.
Any ideas on how to hit these hours without spending 100 hours off the job with each candidate???

Tough question and open to interpretation so I would advise working closely with your local SFA. The definition of GLH appears to be more flexible than in the old days so this is worth looking at to see what can be included. Check you qualification guidance and there is some official guidance on this here...

The other consideration is that if you are working with experienced staff then the expectation is that it should cost less to get them qualified. They should not need the same hours as a 16 yr old. This needs to be considered when costing and planning the programme. However, this is not always easy as individual learners will have different needs.

What are others finding here?

Hi Tom
Got a meeting about this next week and I believe as a company we are looking into them a little too much.
APL has got to count towards them too if the learner does not have to do functional or key skills.
Will be interesting to see what happens when we are audited by the SFA

This is a very grey area and I think that the numbers will need to be revised. They would be easy to achieve if you were working out of a classroom a few days of week, but when you see your candidate for two hours a month, and it only takes them around six months to complete, then the GLH is very hard to evidence.

At the moment we ask our candidates to record any kind of CPD that they undertake. This can be simple day-to-day things like: reading a sector specific journal/article; attending a team meeting; and/or coaching/mentoring a colleague (or being coached/mentored). So long as the candidate is able to reflect on this, I don't see why it can't be used towards GLH.
